Rio Tinto Winu Copper Project Gains Nyangumarta Support | Colitco

The Rio Tinto Winu Copper Project Australia has reached an important milestone after Rio Tinto secured support from the Nyangumarta Traditional Owners for the proposed copper-gold development in Western Australia. The agreement follows more than five years of discussions and establishes a framework for continued collaboration as the project progresses.Located in Western Australia’s Great Sandy Desert, approximately 300 kilometres south of Broome, the Winu Copper Project Western Australia is one of Rio Tinto’s most advanced near-term greenfield copper projects. Rio Tinto is targeting first copper production from Winu by 2030, making the project an important part of the company’s future copper growth strategy.The latest agreement provides a pathway for Nyangumarta knowledge, priorities and perspectives to be incorporated into project planning. It also places greater emphasis on environmental management and the protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage as development activities move forward.The Nyangumarta Support for Winu Copper Project represents a significant step in strengthening engagement between Rio Tinto and the Traditional Owners. The agreement builds on the Project Planning Agreement established in 2023 and provides a framework for ongoing discussions throughout the development process.Winu is being developed through a joint venture in which Rio Tinto holds a 70% interest and acts as developer and operator, while Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining holds the remaining 30%. The project could also create opportunities for training, employment and local businesses in the surrounding region.
